All the evaporators mentioned so far can be used at different operating pressures: high pressure, atmospheric pressure, reduced pressure (vacuum). Consequently, they can be linked up so that the vapour given off in an evaporator can be used to heat the subsequent one, which operates at a lower pressure, and so on. The multiple-effect evaporator has the main advantage to decrease the steam consumption.
